Chic 1973/1974 sequin paillette dress done in a light as air sheer silk from collectible designer Stephen Burrows. Wide bateau neckline, wide kimono sleeves and shift shape. Interior has a string to belt in front (or back) to give more shape. Pullover style. Slightly curved hem on the side.

Stephen Burrows was the first African American fashion designer to achieve international acclaim, he won Coty awards in 1973, 1974 and 1977, was one of the five American designers to show their clothes along with the French couturiers at Versailles in 1973 (the others being Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Halston and Anne Klein). (Excerpt from VFG) Best known for his vibrant use of color, his matte jersey designs have become synonymous with the youthful nonchalance of the 1970s. Indeed, his designs rejected many of the tenets once considered as basic to clothing design. For example, in place of button closures, Burrows’ designs employed snaps and lacing. He left his machine-stitched seams exposed and used brightly colored, zigzag stitching to draw attention to this element rather than conceal it. Instead of hemming his skirts, Burrows would stitch the edges of his garments so they wouldn’t unravel, lending an unfinished appearance to his designs and resulting in a rippled “lettuce effect” that became his signature.
